Uniforms

I purchased my uniforms 12/28/08 from doveapparel.com. The form said order before 12/29/08 to guarantee it arrives before 02/09/09. They arrived 12/30/08. Sheesh quick delivery. If I had known it only would have taken 2 days to get it, I could have ordered them in january when I didnt just spend all my money on christmas and my sons 2nd birthday. Sheesh. At least they're here. And for $237 for a jacket, 2 tops and 2 pants, i would have imagined they'd have a school patch or something. It will suck if I need to purchase patches seperately and place them myself.

december twenty

I need to order my uniforms before the 29th. And for one zip top, one pair of long pants, and a jacket, it will be about $150. Real convenient with Christmas right here. (note sarcasm) I called to make sure I didn't have to buy them riiight now, but I do. It says order before 12/29/08 if your clinicals start 02/09/09. 01/19/09 for 03/03/09, and some more dates. I thought I would be fine ordering before 1/19 because class doesn't start until 2/17, we couldn't possibly start clinicals before March, but nursing department says order now, not right now, but yesterday type now.

I have scheduled my physical and all my shots, titers, and tests for Monday. I've heard the tetanus shot sucks. I was sore for 2 days from a Hep B shot. I only just started my hep B series 12/18/08, I hope this doesn't exclude me from the program!

I need to mail off my class petition form to substitute English 1b with humanities 200 from a different school. I hope they approve it. I don't look forward to a literature class wasting my time, when I've had a similar class already.

I'm working on dosage calculations and medical terminology independently. We need the knowledge and not necessarily the units. I purchased the book that the class was using to self-teach for dosage calc: Dosage Calculations 7th Edition by Gloria D Pickar, isbn 9780766862869 or 0766862860. And I purchased a book online for med term but haven't received it yet: Quick Medical Terminology: A Self-Teaching Guide, 4th edition by Shirley Soltesz Steiner isbn 9780471233596 or 0471233595. I haven't received the med term book yet. I should be doing a chapter now instead of blogging. :-X Oops.

I start my first class 01/12/09, Nurs 151, Human Development and Health. We technically start winter session because I don't think that class is even offered in spring 09. It's 2 days a week, for 4 weeks; 3 hours 20 minutes per session. I should order my book for that class now. I'll definitely let you know how that first day works out!

I find that like to rent my books, I use chegg.com, if you're interested. They can get just about any book you need, I find it to be most helpful for classes that are using a very recent edition of a book when you can't find it for a reasonable price anywhere else.

december sixteeth

Nothing way exciting. I got a call from the nursing department asking for a email address, even though I am pretty sure I had to write one on the application, but it was campus email, and i guess not everyone checks campus email regularly.

I was going to switch doctors, but I've been saying that for the last 6 months. So I might as well put calling my doctor for a physical on my things to do list for the morning. That will be one thing out of the way, over and done.

Find me on allnurses.com, my username is VirgoStar. I'm newish there and haven't posted tons, but I like forums.

shopping

Last night, I went out to try on shoes for clinicals. I have never had to be on my feet for hours and hours on a regular basis. And when I am up and out all day my back aches horribly, my knees hurt, and most recently I have shin splints. So I will need shoes that make all that stuff not happen. I recently bought some dr. Scholls tri comfort inserts for my everyday shoes. And I don't hurt as much but I also haven't been doing a whole lot of walking to really know if there is a difference. I think they help. Well. I tried the nike shox that I heard good things about and they were not comfortable on my feet at all. I know some shoes take some breaking in, but I don't think i would have wanted to wear these to even break them in; I needed a 8.5 womens in this shoe. The ryka brand shoes I tried on were not super comfortable either, and I needed a 9.5 women in this. I tried some nike airwalks which were much mor comfortable and probably would have been even better with some inserts. The best pair of shoes that I tried were Reebok "The Focus". They were so comfy on my feet that they didn't feel like they needed breaking in. I don't know how being on my feet on them all day would have felt. I was ready to buy them and make them mine; they were only $30 at warehouse shoe sales. My significant other (SO) told me I should wait. So I didn't buy them. Maybe he will. I wanted to try out some new balance but I had no luck finding all white styles in my size in store.

I'm also looking at buying a mini laptop. I've got my eye on the Asus Eee 904HA to be particular. Mini laptop plus 160GB. Heck yes! $350! More heck yes! I doubt ill need a pda for my program, but I don't know. I want this computer to take notes on because I type faster than I write. And it will be easier to organize notes on a computer. I hate having to put arrows and stuff in my notes when a teacher goes back to a topic. I think a laptop will make notetaking a lot easier. And the one I want is supposed to get like 6/7 hours of battery use! Score! I spent about 2 hours looking at mini laptops online last night. I'm somewhat confidant with my choice, the only thing that would make it better would be if I could try it out in store just to make sure I love it. Maybe I will find it somewhere.

I'm in!

I was recently accepted into the associate level RN nursing program at el camino community college- compton center in Compton, Ca starting Spring 2009. I received my letter in the mail Saturday, December 13, 2008. I had reason to believe that I was accepted before I officially got the letter. I tried to enroll in the winter session nursing class, the Thursday before I received my letter, and it let me add it to my schedule. That was a big heads up. And also the nursing program called me and asked which address to send my letter to. But they shouldn't have. We had to self address and postage the envelopes they were sending our responses in, so there shouldn't have been a reason for them to call me even though I have 2 addresses on file. I thought they would send supplemental information in another envelope because of the call, but so far, no only an ACCEPTANCE LETTER!

So with the acceptance letter, they sent a letter with some information about a mandatory meeting in January; A uniform order form (and those things are expensive!); and a sheet to get filled out for my physical where I need a tetanus booster, TB test, and titers for HepB, measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella. It also contained a copy of my TEAS results (85.9% and 88th percentile nationally and for my program). It suggested I take a dosage calculations class, but I just purchased a book with CD, that should be self-teaching, so i will learn it that way. I also should have took a medical terminology class, but again, i'll buy a self-teaching book and all should be good.

I'm nervous, I'm excited, I should kick back and relax while I can because come January, I will be in the program, and I plan to work my butt off like never before. I'm going to try to be the absolute best me that i could be.
